The architectural design for this project centred on a sensitive transformation of the existing community gardens, with a focus on accessibility, heritage, and community character. Our aim was to create a space that felt more welcoming while retaining the features that local residents value.
A new memorial stone was introduced as a meaningful focal point, and existing stone from the site was thoughtfully reused to maintain a sense of continuity and reduce waste. We also incorporated gently curved walling to provide additional seating and soften the overall layout. One of the most cherished elements of the gardens, the community’s sheep seats, was carefully integrated into the new design, ensuring these familiar features remained part of the space.
The entire area was resurfaced to create a cohesive flow, and a balanced mix of soft and hard landscaping was developed to enhance usability and enrich the garden’s character. The result is a more accessible, inviting, and thoughtfully composed community space.
